Fillings

A filling repairs a tooth that has a cavity. The dentist removes the decayed part, cleans the space and fills it, so you can use the tooth normally again.

When you might need one

• a tooth that is sensitive to sweet, hot or cold food
• food catching in a hole or a rough edge
• a dark spot or a broken corner on a tooth

Small cavities often cause no pain. That is one reason regular check-ups help: a small filling is simpler than treating a tooth after decay has gone deeper.

What to expect

Most fillings are done in one visit. The dentist tells you which filling material suits your tooth, and the price, before starting. If decay has reached the nerve, a filling may not be enough, and the dentist will explain the options.
